MINIGUIDE:
The Frac is a formal men’s suit, which is the most elegant type of men’s clothing still in use. It should only be worn in the evening, when the occasion calls for it and the invitation says ‘white tie’ (as opposed to the ‘black tie’ that identifies the dinner jacket).
Some of the most well-known occasions on which tailcoats are worn include embassy receptions, state dinners, royal coronations, balls, etc. It is not at all suitable for weddings (for which a morning suit is indicated), unless these take place in the evening.
Jacket
It is black, with silk lapels and has the characteristic ‘swallowtails’, from which the name in use in Anglo-Saxon countries ‘tailcoat’ or ‘tails’ is derived. At the waist, the jacket is rather short and has two rows of buttons on the outside (three on each side, no more) placed obliquely, for purely ornamental purposes. The jacket is not perfect if it is not embellished with the white note of the (silk) pocket handkerchief and the ends of the shirt cuffs, which must always be visible.
Trousers
Black, without crease or lapels with double chevron.
White waistcoat or alternatively white sash.
It is usually with a diplomatic collar, i.e. turned up with the points folded outwards. The cuffs are fastened by cufflinks.
