MINIGUID:
The Frac is a formal men’s suit, constituting the most elegant type of men’s clothing still in use. It should be worn only in the evening, when the occasion calls for it and the invitation says “white tie” (as opposed to the “black tie” that identifies the tuxedo instead.
Some of the most well-known occasions in which the tailcoat is worn include wedding ceremonies, embassy receptions, state dinners, royal coronations, balls, and so on.
Jacket
It is black, with silk lapels and has the characteristic “swallowtails,” from which it derives the name in use in Anglo-Saxon countries “tailcoat” (“tails jacket”) or “tails.” At the waist, however, the jacket is rather short and has on the outside two rows of buttons (three on each side, no more) placed obliquely, purely for ornamental purposes. The jacket is not perfect if it is not embellished by the white note of the pocket handkerchief (silk) and the ends of the shirt cuffs, which should always be visible.
Pants
They are black, without pleats or lapels.
Vest
White in cotton piqué honeycomb design.
It is usually with a diplomatic collar, that is, turned up with the points folded outward. The cuffs are fastened by cufflinks.
