If you receive an invitation where it says, “black tie,” “cravate noire,” or “evening gown,” you must wear a tuxedo.
The quintessential evening gown has many names: while in most of the world it is called a tuxedo, in the United States it is called a tuxedo, and in England dinner jacket.
The tuxedo may also be referred to as black tie; this is to distinguish it from the tailcoat, or white tie, which is worn exclusively with a white tie. There is no shortage of occasions for wearing a tuxedo. An important dinner, a premiere at the theater, an elegant evening: in any case, always when accompanying a lady in evening dress. In general, if the event takes place in the evening, the tuxedo is the appropriate dress.
The tuxedo jacket, almost always black, may have “lance” or “shawl” lapels; the pants should have a silk band on the side; the shirt preferably in the diplomatic model, with double cufflinks. The whole is completed by sash, bow tie.
