If you receive an invitation that says “black tie”, “cravate noire” or “evening dress”, you must wear a tuxedo.
The evening dress par excellence has many names: if in almost all the world it is called tuxedo, in the USA it is called tuxedo, and in England dinner jacket. The tuxedo can also be referred to as black tie, black bow tie; this to distinguish it from the frac, or white tie, which is worn exclusively with the white bow tie.
